TRIATHLON SWIM HALTED BY WIND

SOME 1,500 men and women descended on Seaford at the weekend for the fourth South Coast Classic Triathlon. The event is one of the largest triathlons in the British calendar and boasts one of the best spectator courses.

In past years weather has been scorching, almost too hot for competitors. This year, however, was in complete contrast. Cloudy skies and wind were the flavour for the weekend with the odd shower. The forecast had concerned the organisers and Seaford Lifeguards who were providing the safety cover for the swimmers.

At 8am on Saturday morning the reluctant decision was taken to cancel the swim. In true triathlon tradition, the swim was swapped for a short run which is the case around the world with the multi-discipline sport.

Race commentator and event director Vic Bickerton said: 'Athletes competed over different distance races over the two-day event with Classic, Sprint and Fun distance races.'

The wind was constant on both days and although probably disappointing for the competitors to have a run-bike-run event instead of a swim-bike-run event, it was no less a tough challenge.
