Engineers worked throughout the night and the gas leak was repaired by 7pm that evening.

However, investigations into how the leak started are still on going today (Friday January 20).

A spokesperson from Sussex Police said: “Police were called at 2.40pm yesterday (Thursday 19 January) by the Gas Board following a report of a significant leak in Old Mill Square, Storrington.

“Officers assisted West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service with evacuating the shopping centre whilst the Gas Board located the source of the leak.

“The area was declared safe and the road re-opened at about 9pm.”
