Network Rail said engineers will be working through the weekend as part of its upgrade plan to provide a bigger, better, and more reliable railway for passengers.

People who need to travel are advised to plan ahead and leave more time for their journeys.

If they are travelling on Saturday (January 16) and Sunday (January 17), buses will replace trains between Three Bridges to Brighton and Lewes.

Southern trains will run on a diversion route between Brighton and London Victoria via Horsham.

Upgrade works this weekend will include:

- 600m of new track from Copyhold Junction to Haywards Heath and 800m of new rail between Three Bridges and Preston Park

- Upgrade works at Gatwick Airport station

- Drainage works between Cooksbridge and Lewes

- Platform repairs at Cooksbridge station

- Maintenance works between Wivelsfield and Brighton.

Shaun King, route director for Sussex, said: “To keep trains running reliably, we have to continue with our Railway Upgrade Plan to replace worn-out track and other equipment. Hundreds of trains run on these tracks every day and by doing these works, we can continue to improve their reliability and improve the journeys of passengers.”

Angie Doll, managing director for Southern and Gatwick Express, added: “Please only travel if you need to. If you are travelling by rail, you can rest assured we are working hard behind the scenes to keep your trains and stations clean and safe. Allow extra time for your journey in case Network Rail’s work affects your route this weekend, and always remember the golden rules: hands, face, space. Wash your hands before and after every trip, wear a face covering and keep your distance.”
