Police name man who died in Hastings collision

Police have identified the man who died at the scene of a head-on collision in Hastings.

Marcus Haynes, 65, of Cheltenham, in Gloucestershire, died in a collision in Fairlight Road, Hastings, on March 6.

Police confirmed the man’s identity on Tuesday (April 14).

Also on Tuesday, a spokesman for Sussex Police confirmed that a 39-year-old man from Hastings was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police said at around 6.48pm on March 6, there was a minor collision involving a blue Audi A4 and an orange Volkswagen Polo in Fairlight Road.

Shortly afterwards, the Audi was involved in a head-on collision in the same road, close to the junction with Coastguard Lane, with a beige Citroen Xsara Picasso containing a family from Gloucestershire.

According to police, the Citroen driver – Marcus Haynes – was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The front seat passenger – a 23-year-old man – was taken to Conquest Hospital in St Leonards with minor injuries, police added.

The rear seat passenger – a 65-year-old woman – was taken to King’s College Hospital in London with life-threatening injuries.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “A 39-year-old man from Hastings was arrested on March 13 on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, committing an act with intent to pervert the course of public justice, producing a controlled drug of Class B – cannabis resin, and being the driver of a vehicle failing to stop after a road accident.

“He was interviewed and released under investigation.”
