Time is running out for artists to be involved with new Sainsbury's

All submissions of interest need to be received by the company by next Tuesday.

Interviews of prospective artists for the public art project will take place early next month.

Daren Carpenter, Sainsbury’s project manager, said: “We are confident that this exciting public artwork project will enhance the approach into the town and will remain as a key feature of the store for many years to come.

“While we have received a number of excellent submissions already, we are keen to get as wide a selection of designs as possible.

“I urge any local artist to get in contact by the end of the month to ensure their submission is considered.”

The 55,000sq ft new store is being built on the former Lec refrigeration factory site on the A29 Shripney Road.

It is due to open this year. As part of its design, Sainsbury’s has provided space for public artwork to be installed on the elevation which faces the road.

The winning design will need to reflect the nature and history of Bognor and honour the site. Of special importance, will be its rich history with Lec.

The store will mark the return to 
the town by the retailer after more 
than 22 years.

The multi-million investment is seen as part of the town’s regeneration in making new use of a derelict site and providing hundreds of jobs at a key location.

It was also allowed on environmental grounds by cutting the number of car journeys which Sainsbury’s customers make to the company’s store in Chichester.

The store will be housed on two floors and will include a cafe with a petrol filling station outside.

Sainsbury’s has given £500,000 to be spent on projects around Bognor town centre to lessen the impact of its store on existing shops.
