Talks held to begin work on ten-year-old building plan

Talks are taking place to ensure work starts this year on major housing estates in North Bersted and Felpham.

The summer marks the tenth anniversary of the unveiling of the site six proposals for 1,350 homes and the Bognor Regis northern relief road.

But the recession means no building has yet begun although a series of planning permissions has finally been given for the development.

The road is seen by Arun District Council as a key part of the town's regeneration plans because it will provide a route for traffic away from the town centre.

The housing '“ 650 dwellings in North Bersted and 700 in Felpham '“ will also include hundreds of much-needed affordable homes.

Arun chief planning officer Karl Roberts said: "There are lots of behind-the-scenes discussions going on. We are talking to the developers and the Homes in the Communities agency of central government to, hopefully, get site six up and running.

"Hopefully, we will see some movement '“ hopefully the housing '“ possibly before the end of the year.

"We are working hard to encourage a start in the autumn. It's about trying to get the different partners to do their bit. A lot of this is about financial confidence."

The homes will be built by Berkeley Homes, Barratt and Persimmon.

But the last information from any of the companies said just one home a week would be built on the Felpham site to make it 12 years before the development was complete.
