PUBLIC INFORMATION NOTICE: This notice has been brought to my attention with a request that this information is passed to as many people as possible in order to prevent unnecessary upset and distress. The local Police Community Support Officer has stated that there has been an increase in the number of break-in’s to vehicles in this area and as this is now the long summer holiday break - with more vehicles to-ing & fro-ing, there will be more opportunity for these ‘chancers’ to make use of. It is not just vehicles that have been left open, that are being targeted, - windows are also being smashed to gain entry and the Sussex Police Force would respectfully like to remind us all NOT to leave valuables in their cars, bags on display; - mobile ‘phones on the dashboard; - lap-tops and other such equipment on the back seats. It is mainly car parks and lay-bys used by dog walkers, ramblers, runners etc. that have been targeted in the Rother region, but not entirely. The Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to urge anyone who sees anyone acting suspiciously, in any circumstance to call 999 or 101 as soon as possible. Doing this small, simple act may help prevent a bigger crime from taking place. This in turn, should make all of our lives that little less stressful and allow us all to enjoy life as it should be - with one less thing to worry about.

STAPLECROSS VILLAGE HALL: Many of you may have noticed that the little corner of the lawned area in front of the Village Hall, which when first created was a joy to behold, - is not, at present, looking at it’s best !. Sadly when this little garden was first brought to fruition, time and effort were available in much larger doses than is at present and with the very busy lives that we all lead and with the various commitments now undertaken, the original ‘crew’ are finding it very hard to arrange the workforce schedule for the continuing upkeep of this little area due to the pressures made on their already stretched free time. Therefore, - an appeal is now being launched for a “GARDENING ANGEL” (or more than one- if heaven is on our side) to help turn this tiny piece of garden back from rapidly rivalling that of Heligan. Somewhere under all the unwanted and unwelcome visitor plants, (weeds to you & I) is a lovely little plot with some beautiful plants and shrubs just waiting to be re-discovered. Could you be that person to help bring it back to life?. Once this little slice of gardening glory, is brought back to it’s original status, it shouldn’t require more than 2 or 3 hours a month to keep it in ship shape fashion, as a little plot of heaven to make you smile & feel good about and once more the haven for wildlife that it was. You don’t have to be an ‘Alan Titchmarsh Identikit, or even be super fit, or a font of all gardening knowledge, just some-one who is willing to help reclaim a hidden treasure. The main requirements for this small step for man or woman but one enormous appreciative one from the community, are lots of enthusiasm, a little bit of commitment and a little bit of elbow grease. Therefore, if you (and perhaps, a friend or two, or even a small group) feel that you would like to do something good for the community, - and for yourself, as gardening is highly recommended by the medical profession, - then PLEASE, get in touch with Hilary Ganly, Village Hall Chairperson on 01580~830704 for all details of just what is required- which really isn’t much. The community will be ever grateful and your efforts always much appreciated as a little bit of garden, is a joy forever.

EWHURST GREEN BIENNIAL BAR-B-Q. The saying - the sun always shines on the righteousness- certainly rang true for all the folk who attended this superb village event on Saturday last (July 25th) as the sun shone all day and the weather stayed warm & dry well into the evening. This fund-raising event was an enormous success with a full turn out from many local friends and supporters. I have been asked to say a huge “THANK YOU” to ALL the many people who helped make this such a joyous occasion :-- When the Arthur Herdman Pavilion and field was inspected at 7.00am on the morning of this event, Dave Perkins and Derek Catt, were amazed to find it in such a great condition, so sighs of relief were felt all round. Grateful thanks must certainly go to Derek for all his hard work on this field to get it ready for this celebrationary event. To start, let’s begin with -Jenny Havill and the Committee - Sarah Corbett, Ruth Close, Jenny Lynam, Sue Stephenson, and Anna West for organising it. To- Fiona & Douglas Flint for the loan of the numerous tables and the all-important marquees. To- Mike Falcon for allowing the use of his field to be turned into an impromptu car park. To- the Lawrence family from Padgham Farm, Ewhurst for the generous supply and donation of the straw bales for seating, - no alfresco event can be a success without them. To- Johnny Jones for supplying the delicious pig which was thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by all who partook of it, as was the new local Ewhurst Ale, -”White Rabbit” brew which is produced from the smallholding of David Bowles, - always ably assisted by Richard Hodgson. This increasingly popular ‘real ale’ was certainly another attraction which only added to the ensuring merriment. Naturally, many thanks must be given to all the Bar ‘Blokes’ who very successfully ran the liquid refreshment side of things. All festivities need music to help with the ambience, and this music, which had one and all at some time or another, up on their feet - including our own wonderful Dave Perkins, recovering from long & drawn out painful knee surgery, but who still managed - on 1 leg and 1 stick, however, to ‘flaunt’ himself on the dance floor, - was provided by the brilliant “Mocking Jays” At the end of a superb raffle, the princely sum of £235:00 was able to be added to the funds which will go to the PCC and other worthwhile causes. Special mention must be made to Jan Webber for her unstinting support throughout the arrangements and of course, Glenys Griffiths for every little job she undertook from beginning to end. Sincere apologies must be extended to all those whose names I haven’t mentioned, (and there must be some, I’m sure,) but regardless,- no event can be considered a success without them, so many sincere thanks to you all. This event was a wonderful evening from start to finish, and like many of those who had a fabulous time, we’re all looking forward to the next one.

STAPLECROSS BOWLS CLUB: The fixture list for this busy but dedicated bowls club, continues ever onwards, with four (4) more matches to be played out this week. The first is a home match at the club’s ground in Northiam Road, Staplecross on Saturday August 1st beginning at 2.30pm with the club playing against Beckley. The following day Sunday August 2nd. sees the club play an ‘Open Triples’ commencing at 9.10.am. Match No:3 is another home game, to be played on Wednesday August 5th and this time the club are set against St.Leonards and this will also start at 2.30pm. Last but certainly not least, the club will play an away match against the Stoolball club on Friday August 7th and this will commence at 6.15pm. If you are able to pop along and give your support to this club, please do so. You will always be warmly welcomed and perhaps, you may find yourself interested in also becoming a new member. STAPLECROSS STOOLBALL CLUB: Only two (2) more fixtures this week and then this will see the end of the current season of matches for this energetic and friendly local sports club. Match no: 1 is planned to take place on Sunday August 2nd with an away match at Icklesham, commencing at 10.30am. Sadly, Match No: 2 will be the last to be played this year, I believe, and is a home match with their opponents hailing from Hooe, but as it will be played out on their home ground at Northiam Road, Staplecross, and will be an evening match, beginning at 6.45pm. this could be the ideal match to go along and cheer our side on. Supporters are always very welcome at any of the club’s fixtures, whether vocal or not, and new members are warmly & enthusiastically encouraged to make themselves known at any time, to any of the club’s members. If you feel that you’d like to become a part of this special sport club, in whatever role, then please contact Pauline on 01580~830570 in the first instance.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: In spite of, or despite the unreliable weather we are experiencing at present, there are two more walks arranged for us to take part in this week. Walk No: 1 is a 10 miles circular stroll between East Dean and Alfriston. - just glorious at any time of the year, and regardless of the weather !. Arranged to take place on Sunday August 2nd all those interested in joining in, should meet at the East Dean village car park. OS EXP.123. TV558978. (SatNav BN20 0DL) at 10.00am. A picnic lunch is suggested and Richard will be your ‘walk leader’ for today, so please contact him on 01424~892865 for all further details. Walk No: 2 is more closer to home, and just as delightful, exploring those hidden gems few of us get to see as this will be a mere 5 mile circular stroll between Crowhurst and Telham. This walk is planned to take place on Wednesday August 5th and will be part of the Rother Ramblers Evening Walks Programme. All those interested in discovering these little hidden gems for themselves should meet at Crowhurst Railway Station. OS EXP 124. TQ760128. (SatNav TN33 9DD) at 6.30.pm. As this will be an evening meander, drinks and a packet of crisps will be taken at the Black Horse, Telham, midway through the walk. MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE: The East Sussex Mobile Library service will once more be arriving in Ewhurst Green on Thursday August 6th from 11.10am. and will depart at 11.40am. Wherever and whenever possible, please do make as much use of this (still) free service as possible whilst we still have this amazing service available to us. Opening up a book can open up a whole new world for you, - try it and see.

OUT AND ABOUT: Information has been given about three amazing events which are planned to take place this week-end, and which are sure to please a great deal of people. All of these events are FREE, two will take place OUTSIDE, and all are aimed at FUN for families.

Event No: 1 will take place on Saturday August 1st, at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill when this superb venue will be holding an OUTSIDE SCREENING of the 1982 classic film “E.T. The Extra Terrestrial” This fantastic family film, which everyone at some time in their life should see, is free to everyone and will be shown on the sea-facing wall. This can only add to the atmospheric surroundings and make this classic film that much more enjoyable. The outside terrace bar will be open during the afternoon and evening for hot & cold drinks, snacks and ice creams. The screen will come to life at approximately 8.30pm. but please dress up warm and bring something to sit on,- a snuggly blanket or wrap may also be a good idea, - especially for the wee ones -as it can get chilly so close to the sea. Event No: 2 is planned to take place -or perhaps launch, maybe a better description, at Egerton Park Indoor Bowls Club, Egerton Road, Bexhill TN39 3HL. on Sunday August 2nd between 10.30am and 5.00pm. The East Sussex Astronomical Society, will be holding a day of astronomical and space related activities including observing the sun with solar scopes, making rockets and then launching them, laser tours of the night sky, the Solar System Walk around the Park, Birth star, Interactive Sky maps and much, much more. There will be lots of displays to peruse and lots of giveaways, which are always enticing. There will be a free Planetarium Theatre visit. - booking on day. - and you can even get to hold one of the oldest things on Earth, - a meteor that landed in Arizona U.S.A. 700,000 years ago !. A bar and snacks will be available, - sorry, not free, but it’ll help to keep you going whilst you lose yourself amongst the numerous stalls and displays, and there will also be the chance to win a variety of super prizes .Come along and meet various Sci Fi characters including those from ‘Star Wars’. There is sure to be lots and lots to interest all members of the family so please come and join in this free fun-filled family day out. BREDE STEAM GIANTS: Following on from the success of the last open day, Brede Steam Giants are holding a regular ‘Open Day’ on the first Saturday of each month and every Bank Holiday Monday. The next open day will be on Saturday August 1st between 10.00am and 4.00pm. This fascinating Heritage Site in Brede (SatNav TN316HG) which is also FREE to the public, offers visitors the chance to discover some of British Engineering at it’s best, featuring giant engines, working pumps, their very own secret bunker plus children and other ‘young at hearts’ will have great fun getting to grips with and trying out the smaller pumps that demonstrate how water is moved around. When you need a breather, there is always the lovely Tangye Tea Bar to refresh and revitalise you in preparation for more of this amazing Water Heritage site of British Engineering, linked by the common thread of water.

CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday August 2nd.Trinity 9. at 9.30am. This service will include Holy Communion. A Family Service at St. Giles church, Bodiam will follow directly after at 11.15am. There will be NO SERVICE held today at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross. Both services will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester and if there is any church matter in which he can be of service, then he’ll be only too pleased to do so.
