Speeding crackdown in Bognor Regis

Law-breaking motorists were caught by police using a handheld speed meter for the first time on the roads around Bognor Regis.

The week-long crackdown on speeding motorists was carried out by police community support officers and police constables based in the town.

They stopped 30 motorists for excessive speeding out of the 1,170 whose vehicles were checked.

A number of those stopped received 60 tickets and three penalty points on their driving licences.

PC Mick Jones said: "The point of the operation was not just to issue tickets to drivers but influence driver behaviour and slow down speeding traffic on our roads.

"Sometimes, this can be done more effectively by speaking to drivers and giving them words of advice rather than issuing them with a ticket for speeding.

"It was encouraging that only a small number of drivers checked were speeding. All the sites were passed to police by local residents who wanted us to conduct the checks.

"It is hoped that operations like this will become a regular occurrence on the roads in Bognor, helping to reduce speeding and making the roads safer for everyone."
