Southwick pub's smoking plans stubbed-out

A SOUTHWICK pub's plans to provide a glass, sheltered area for smokers '“ so they don't break the new anti-smoking laws from July '“ have been shattered.

Adur District Council's planning committee refused permission for the lean-to shelter at the back of The Cricketers pub at Southwick Green, on the grounds that it would cause noise and disturbance to people living nearby.

The pub wanted to put up the building, which would be entered from the public bar area, for smokers to have a cigarette without breaking the new laws, which ban smoking in public and licensed premises.

Adur council officers had recommended a temporary planning approval to see how the structure affected the neighbours, but councillors threw it out.
