Southwick Players set Shakespeare's comedy in 1920s

Loved for centuries and one of Shakespeare’s most performed plays, it will be directed by Harry Atkinson at the Barn Theatre, Southwick, from Wednesday, July 22, to Saturday, July 25. An experienced Shakespearian director, he is preparing a refreshing and inspired performance.

“I chose to direct this production in a 1920s setting because this era provides the perfect vehicle for its exuberance, its zany humour and its larger than life characters,” he explained.

Musical director Michael James has arranged the 1920s numbers and composed the music for the fairies’ song to give it a 1920s feel.

“We have chosen numbers to fit the themes of the play, Yes Sir, That’s My Baby and I Love My Baby are the opening and closing numbers and give just the right feel to these four love stories,” he said.

The play can best be described as a romantic comedy, full of confusions, misunderstandings, lovers’ quarrels, fairy tricks and magic potions, all of which end happily with three marriages and great celebration.

Choreographer Laura Redmond has created dance and movement sequences to help the cast of 22 bring to life the magical world.

Oberon, King of the Fairies, is played by award-winner actor and director Tony Bright, of Wantley Road, Findon Valley, and Queen Titania is played by Joanna Ackroyd, of Amberley Road, Storrington.
