Rye woman warns over dangerous Winchelsea Beach sand

Rose Archer, from Rye, and her granddaughter Zola Clifford were swimming in the shallows of the low tide on Wednesday, July 1, but suddenly sunk and became trapped.

The pair called for help and three men managed to get Mrs Archer out of the mud while she held Zola up. Mrs Archer said she never heard of anything like this happening at Winchelsea before.

“It was terrifying,” she said. “It was a miracle that it happened how it did as someone was there to save us because I dread to think what would have happened if they weren’t.”

Zola said she wanted to thank the rescuers who pulled her and her grandmother from the mud.

There are no warning signs on the beach and Mrs Archer thought the council should erect some to warn others.

“The fact that it’s a very serious condition, there should be some warning signs so people are aware because with the weather getting warmer, it’s likely to get worse with climate change.”
