Rye Landgate’s future delegated by council

The Landgate’s future will be put into the hands of an external party as Rother District Council cabinet members decided to allow other groups to explore options for the landmark.

Rye Town Council was proposed as a possible suitor, along with other voluntary heritage groups in the town by members at a meeting yesterday (Monday, October 5).

Councillors believed voluntary or charitable groups would have a better chance of securing grants than a local authority.

The Landgate Tower dates back to 1340 when it was built to guard against marauding French warships during the Hundred Years War.

Cllr Lord Ampthill said Rye Conservation Society was also interested in the ‘very significant building in Rye’ and the council’s ‘modest’ budget of £8,000 would not cover its refurbishment.

“It continues to deteriorate as a result of the degradation from herring, gulls and pigeons and something needs to be done about a roof,” he said.

The officer’s report said there are three options for the Landgate’s future – carry out ‘essential’ repairs and leave as is, consolidate as a ruin and open to the public, or turn it into a museum or holiday-let.

The councillor for Rye said the second option was the most viable and had doubts about it becoming a museum due to the amount of supervision required.
