Runaway youths head for the rooftops

FIREFIGHTERS assisted police after four youths scaled the roof of the Down Drill Hall while attempting to evade capture.

The chase began after youths smashed a large plate glass window at the Viking Fish Bar at the London Road/Little Common Road traffic lights.

PC Roy Warren and PC Ron Knight gave chase.

PC Warren said: "We just happened to be going by and saw a group of people looking at the smashed window and four youths aged about 14 to 16 running up London Road.

"We managed to corner them in the yard at the rear of the Down Drill Hall but they climbed on to the roof.

"We had to call the fire brigade to get them down. They were very good. They turned out with ladders and went up on to the roof to act as go-between between us and the youths."
