Rother is set to fly flag to marknational event

FOR the first time ever hundreds of flags will be raised across the country to mark Commonwealth Day.

At 10am next Monday, a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation will be read before the flag is raised at Bexhill Town Hall by Chairman of Rother District Council, Cllr Ian Jenkins.

It will be one of 500 flags expected to be raised by local authorities, civic dignitaries, community groups and charities.

Flags will be flown at many locations including the four capital cities of the United Kingdom, Land’s End and the Shetland Islands, at the Rothera Research Station on the Antartic Peninsula and at the Halley VI Research Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf.

The event aims to show a commitment to the Commonwealth and the values it stands for.

Charity teams will also mark the day by taking the Commonwealth flags to the top of the UK’s four highest National Parks – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, Mount Snowdown and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland.
