Rother aims to raise £1.2m from car park charges

ROTHER District Council wants to raise more than £1.2m of income from its car parks in 2014/15.

At a meeting of the council’s Resources and Services Overview and Scrutiny Committees on Monday, members agreed upon a number of ‘key performance indicators’ which RDC will use to measure its performance over the period.

One of these was the council’s desire to bring in £1,253,100 in car park income.

A council spokesman said: “The money generated from car park charges is used for the running costs of these facilities, including maintenance of car parks, security and pursuing and collecting unpaid parking charges.

“Any money left over is used for essential services such as waste collection, recycling and street and beach cleaning. Faced with Government funding cuts of 40 per cent, the operational cost of these has to be supplemented from local sources of income in order to protect services.

“The purpose of setting targets is to monitor our performance in a number of key areas relating to our strategic priorities and the target for car park income for the 2014-15 financial year is unchanged from last year.

“We feel the parking charges in place in the district are fair and balance the need of traders and residents with the need to generate revenue to ensure we can continue to provide the services people need.” A final decision will be made at the next council cabinet meeting on February 10.
