In 2013, 59 per cent of pupils taking GCSEs achieved a total of five or more A*-C grades, including English and maths.

By 2015 this figure had jumped to 66 per cent – a four per cent rise on the
previous year and the best GCSE results ever seen at the college.

Five pupils achieved eight or more A and A* grades and 11 per cent of pupils left with five or more A* and A grades.

Mr Gibb also expressed his thanks to staff for their hard work.

The letter read in full: “I am writing to convey my warmest congratulations to you, your staff and your pupils for your school’s excellent improvement in GCSE and equivalent results between 2013 and 2015.

“Your school is one of the top 100 non-selective state-funded schools in England showing the greatest sustained improvement in the percentage of pupils achieving five or more A*-C grades including English and maths GCSEs.

“Ensuring your pupils are achieving at least the benchmark standard of attainment at key stage four provides a strong basis for their further education and employment.

“Thank you for your work in this important area of a young person’s education and congratulations again to you and your staff for your hard work and professionalism.”

Doug Downs, acting head teacher at Robertsbridge Community College, was thrilled with the news.

He told the Observer: “We are delighted and honoured to receive this recognition which acknowledges the tremendous hard work and effort put in by all pupils, staff and parents to improve academic outcomes at RCC.

“To be ranked in the top hundred schools nationally speaks volumes about the academic ambition of all members of our community.”
