Queens Head critics are told to ‘Get a life’

PEOPLE have spoken out in support of a Rye pub declaring itself a Jubilee Free Zone.

The Queens Head, at Landgate, offended some residents when it put up a picture of the Queen with a diagonal red line across it during the four day celebration at the start of the month.

They were even accused of treason by some angry residents.

But readers leaving comments on the Rye Observer’s web site have backed the pub and levelled criticism at the moaners.

One reader commented: “Some people really do need to get a life if they find something like that offensive, it’s pathetic.

“Also, I hardly think it was done with any intention to “deliberately antagonise” people either.” Another added: “Three cheers for the Queens Head for giving people an alternative place to drink, the moaners need to realise not everyone wanted the Jubilee rammed down their throat 24 hours a day.”

Andy Guainiere, of Tillingham Avenue, in Rye, said: “I wonder if these extreme royalists ever think further than the ends of their noses.

“The monarchy in itself is not a bad thing as it is still a little taste of old England.

“The thing that I cannot come to terms with is bigotry, which unfortunately is rife in Rye.

“We all have freedom of choice and should be allowed to exercise that choice  without some form of retaliation.

“Looking outside the UK it has also been estimated that some 20,000 children have died through poverty and malnutrition while the four day jubilee holiday took place.

“Do people still think the poster is offensive?”

Jacob Palmer commented: “There was nothing offensive at all. Anyone offended by the poster really needs to take a long hard look at their lives.”

Another reader said: “There is nothing wrong with having a monarchy, but the money spent was far more offensive that any poster.

“It has been estimated that The money spent on the jubilee would employ 500 doctors and 10,000 nurses over the next 10 years.”

Reader Chrissie said: “How pathetic. Do people really have nothing to do with their lives apart from complain?

“I may as well say that all the royalist people were upsetting me with all their bunting.”

One reader said: “I find nothing wrong with The Queens Head being a Jubilee free zone. I find it more offensive that we find millions of pounds to spend on the jubilee when there are people living on the streets of this country, I find that more offensive than putting up a few posters.

“Whatever happened to free speech? The Queens has gone right up in my estimation.

Reader P Hopkins said: “ I am sure that some people saw it us a welcome break from the festivities, but I think it was very offensive to put the poster up.

“By all means advertise your pub as jubilee free but they should have gone a different way about it. Most disappointing.”
