Putting the brakes on speeding drivers

SUSSEX Police have been targeting speeding drivers this week, and in just the first two days of the campaign caught 894 offenders across the county.

They included three motorcylists and one car driver doing more than 100mph, and another motorist who was both speeding and crossing double white lines. All five have been reported for summons to court.

Speed checks are being made at both fixed sites and local problem areas, and traffic officer Sergeant Paul Wood said: “Motorists who speed pose a real risk to themselves, their passengers and other road users.

“Driving too fast for the road or weather conditions is extremely dangerous and is a major contributory factor to collisions.

“Part of this campaign is about educating people regarding the consequences of their actions.”

The campaign is part of a national drive to reduce speeding on the roads which is also taking place this week. Anyone concerned about poor driving in Sussex can report it through the force’s ongoing Operation Crackdown.
