Pupils glimpse behind the scene at Goodwood

Goodwood Racecourse was the setting for a day of fun and learning for a group of year ten pupils from Westergate Community School as part of the 'Aim Higher' education programme.

Led by the Judith Allen and Vince Slattery of the British Horse Racing Education and Standards Trust, the pupils, and those from three other schools, were talked through the wide variety of job opportunities in the racing industry.

For an appetiser, professional jockey Vince Slattery gave the students a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the weighing room and jockeys changing rooms, before discussing the handicapping system, and its use as a practical application of the students Maths studies.

BHEST's Judith Allen went on to talk about racehorse physiology as well as safety limitations in the parade ring, before offering an insight into how racing markets itself as a leisure industry.
