Pub opening fears

A SHOREHAM town centre pub has attracted nearly 30 objections in its bid to be allowed to open longer under new licensing laws.

The Crab Tree, in Buckingham Road, has applied to Adur District Council's licensing committee to change the conditions of its licence, but its plans have brought 27 objections from nearby residents, mainly people living in Gordon Road.

The pub wants to open from 7am to 1am, Monday to Thursday, and from 7am to 2am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Residents are concerned that it will increase late-night noise, anti-social behaviour and vandalism in the area.

Sussex police licensing officer Mike Webb has also told the council he is concerned about preventing a public nuisance and is recommending that the licensee holds meetings with residents to settle any issues amicably.

The King's Head, in Fishersgate Terrace, Fishersgate, is also applying to extend its opening hours.

The pub's bid has attracted seven objections from nearby residents. It wants to open from 10am to 12.30am, Monday to Friday, 10am to 2.30am on Saturdays and from noon to 2.30am on Sundays.

The pub wants music to be allowed to be played until 2am and to close at 3.30am on bank holiday weekends.

Police say they are concerned about this and want no one entering the pub after midnight when it is open until 3.30am.

Residents are concerned about the late-night music and opening times until the early hours.

The Swiss Cottage, in Old Shoreham Road, Shoreham, is the third pub to want to open later, with a bid to extend its hours from 9am to 1am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays, and 9am to 2am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

All three applications will be considered by Adur's licensing committee on Monday.
