£200,000 damage in Eastergate barn arson attack - reward offered

Arsonists have been blamed for a devastating fire which caused £200,000 of damage at an Eastergate farm.

Around 200 tons of straw, an articulated lorry trailer and a barn were gutted in the huge blaze at Manor Farm on Friday (April 10) afternoon.

Specialist units were deployed to the fire when firefighters realised the 30sq m steel-framed barn, where the fire is believed to have started, was clad with asbestos.

It took eight crews from stations in Bognor, Chichester and Littlehampton six hours to extinguish the fire, believed to have been started deliberately.

Police are now investigating.

Farmer Paul Helyer said: "The sound of the asbestos burning could be heard a mile and a half mile away at Walberton. Local houses in the village were also showered with burning ash.

He has put up a 1,500 for information leading to the prosecution of the arsonist.

Anyone with any information about the fire is asked to contact Sussex police on 0845 60 70 999.
