Pregnant deer trapped

It was rushed to a specialist deer unit at St Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Buckinghamshire.

The female deer was found caught by her rear leg in stock fencing at Burwash Weald, near Heathfield, last week.

It took four rescuers to carry her almost a mile across country to a waiting veterinary ambulance.

After 24 hours rest and observation and after advice from St Tiggywinkles, it was decided best to rush her to there expert facilities.

Trevor Weeks, rescue co-ordinator for East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service: 'We were concerned when we checked her in as she had made no attempt to stand and was obviously still in a lot of discomfort too, we also could not see any sign of her young moving. This plus our concerns about the way she had struggled whilst caught made us very concerned about the baby and her ability to give birth.'

Mr Weeks from Uckfield and Alec Anscombe from Eastbourne drove the deer. Which was resting between two straw bails and on an inflatable air mattress, to St Tiggywinkles.
