Postcode pointers to life and death

PEOPLE in areas of West Sussex are dying 12 years earlier than others in the county, it has been revealed.

Life expectancy rates vary from 70.8 years in Littlehampton's River ward to 83 years in Bramber, near Steyning, according to figures in West Sussex Primary Care Trust's (PCT) annual report.

Dr Farhang Tahzib, the trust's director of public health and well-being, said in his report: "This difference, 12.2 years, clearly reflects need and health status in these areas, demonstrating significant unacceptable variations within the county.

"There are indications that the gap between the deprived areas in West Sussex and the rest of the county is widening, with mortality rates improving more slowly in the deprived areas than the rest of the county."

Dr James Walsh, who is a town, district and county councillor, as well as a medical doctor, said of the differences: "It's been known about for some years now and it's very much linked to deprived wards set in fairly prosperous West Sussex."
