Covering 13 miles, the circular route encompasses the town, has no difficult gradients and allows access at several points with nearby bus stops to get you home if time or energy is in short supply.

One of the attractions of this local amenity is that it is possible to complete the walk in small sections but once a year individuals and groups are encouraged to join others and enjoy the whole journey in one day.

The Riverside Walk follows several water courses, including the River Arun, and passes some of the older buildings in the town centre.

Sponsorship of the event has been kindly provided by North Horsham Parish Council and the three Horsham neighbourhood councils, Denne, Forest and Trafalgar.

No one should be put off by the length of the walk as a free minibus, on hire from Horsham District Community Transport, will be making frequent calls to designated stops to collect anyone who wants to return to the start.

Two hundred walkers set off in 2014 and over 150 the following year. This year it is hoped to achieve even greater numbers as the walk is intended to help create awareness of dementia and the Alzheimer’s Society.

You and any organisation are encouraged to take part and raise money for that charity by sponsorship. Anyone wishing to raise money in the same way for another cause may, of course, do so.

Meeting and registration for the Riverside Walk will be at Horsham Rugby Club in Hammerpond Road, where there are toilets and ample car parking spaces.

The walk will be started at 10am and, this year, participants will begin by walking northwards through Leechpool and Owlbeech Woods following the route anti-clockwise.

The first refreshment stop will be at the Strawberry Fields café at New House Farm. A pause for lunch will be taken at Warnham Nature Reserve. The last leg includes walking beside Boldings Brook and the River Arun before traversing historic Chesworth Farm.

If you can take part – even if for one section - please register at [email protected] or call 07780 701184.

The organisers say they would like to see early registration to help caterers and to ensure there are sufficient stewards for the event.
