Almost a quarter of the homes, 18 of 75, are proposed as affordable. Of these 12 would be affordable rent and six for shared ownership.

Meanwhile 12 of the private market properties would be flats and the remaining 45 houses.

A town council spokesman said: "The Planning Committee was minded to support this important development. The development of this site, via a master plan, has been a Midhurst Town Council objective for over six years."

Councillors discussed the plans at a planning committee meeting on Monday and, while supporting the development, offered a list of recommendations to the developers.

Other concerns included 'incongruous' designs for buildings at the north of the site and where a car park would best serve the community.
