Sharon Haylett, chef at Care UK’s Skylark House, in St Mark’s Lane, entered the nationwide Care UK baking contest with a cake inspired by the classic Christmas film The Snowman – and was awarded first place.

The competition saw more than 120 Care UK homes across the UK invited to submit their extra special bakes, all inspired by the festive season.

Earlier Skylark House residents were asked to vote on the care home’s cake design, and The Snowman theme was chosen, with many residents sharing happy memories of watching the film at this time of year with their children and grandchildren.

Sharon’s winning bake featured the iconic image of the Snowman and the boy flying above the clouds on top of the cake. A wintery scene completed the design, featuring penguins and Christmas trees, made out of marzipan, and iced gingerbread houses.

Skylark manager Dorota Woloszyn said: “We’re very proud to have won Care UK’s Christmas cake competition.

“Sharon is an incredibly talented chef and a huge asset to our team here at Skylark house.
