Parking campaigners fight off permit zones in Arundel

West Sussex county councillors have thrown out controversial proposals for a residents’ parking scheme in Arundel.

The decision was made at Monday evening’s meeting of the Joint Downland Area Committee (January 21), following an overwhelming response from townspeople opposing the suggestion – which could have seen a residents’ parking scheme and controlled parking zones rolled out across the historic town.

Councillors also agreed to the formation of a new traffic working group, made up of Arundel town and West Sussex county councillors. It will have a major say in future consultations into changes in parking facilities and highway alterations within the town.

Campaigner David Wood, leader of Residents Against Parking Permits (RAPP), was delighted with the decision.

He said: “We are absolutely delighted the totally inappropriate controlled parking zone scheme which the county council proposed to introduce in Arundel has now, at last, been abandoned.

“We are also delighted at the decision that our town council should, in future, play a lead role in formulating any parking proposals for Arundel.”
