Parents concern over planned schools new computer system

Parents are worried about the possible risk to children's health from a planned school wireless system.

Dr Kevin Baker and his wife Kym Murden have blasted proposals by East Sussex County Council to introduce the wireless internet technology in schools across the county.

Their four-year-old son Conor goes to Barcombe School.

Dr Baker said: 'I will not be reassured until I have had an independent view on this.

'Like a number of people I do not believe a word they say.

'The fact is these technologies are new and you should not be experimenting on children- as a parent I feel very strongly about this.

'There has recently been concerns about siting schools and dwellings under electricity pylons, they have been around for decades yet it is only recently that it is coming into the public and media domain.

Dr Baker and his wife, also have a two-year-old child Caitlin, have approached Barcombe School. It said it was still considering its options.

Mrs Murden added: 'We are about to experience a system being placed in our schools that is going to compromise the health of every single child and adult within.

'There has been no thorough assessment of the risk or consultation with we the public, who pay the costs, as to whether it is wanted or needed.

'We do not need to make our children's childhood more toxic than it already is.'

The council proposes to install the Next Generation Network (NGN).

Its says it is different from mobile and other wireless technologies.

A spokesman for East Sussex County Council said: 'It is purely a narrow beam, point-to-point connection between roof-mounted antennas and doesn't provide blanket coverage such as a mobile phone network.

'The technology being used meets or exceeds all UK, European and international health and safety standards.'
