Pagham plans to get tough with owners over dog mess

Tougher measures are to be considered against dog owners who allow their pets to foul an open space in Pagham.

Parish councillors are to consider taking enforcement action to ensure the grassed area at Channel View is kept free of the faeces.

The council's highways and amenities committee decided to install notices to warn owners they face the threat of prosecution if they fail to clear up after their pets.

The area is owned by the parish council. It has recently received two complaints from nearby residents about the state of the site.

Council chairman Ray Radmall said: "We need to take a more robust approach.

"Dog fouling has never been a huge problem on the grassed area, but there have been these regrettable incidents lately.

"This is a serious matter. It's hazardous if children play on the grass if there is dog's mess there as well.

"There are no less than nine notices around there telling people to clear up their dogs' mess and two dog waste bins close by.

"We are going to put up cautionary notices warning the owners about prosecution and then monitor the situation.

"The current notices are advisory and may not be powerful enough. We now need to get some element of enforcement."

Talks had also been held with Arun District Council's dog wardens about patrolling the area, he added.
