At a meeting of the Association’s Executive Council on Friday (24 January) he was given the full support of its members to continue as the Party’s representative for the important rural seat.

Arundel and South Downs is a large rural constituency in West Sussex, taking in a significant stretch of the South Downs and rural market towns and villages including Arundel, Petworth, Pulborough, Steyning and Hurstpierpoint.

Nick has represented the constituency since 2005 when he was elected as the local Member of Parliament at the General Election held in May of that year. He was re-elected in 2010 with an increased majority of 16,691 votes, taking a 57.8 per cent share of the vote.

Since being elected he has championed local communities and led a number of high profile campaigns, notably to save services at the county’s hospitals, improve broadband provision, and protect the rural area from unsustainable development.

As well as taking these concerns to Westminster, Mr Herbert has also focused on international development and criminal justice issues, including a spell as Minister for Policing and Criminal Justice. He is chairman of the All-Party Group on Global TB and is currently working on a project to promote reform of the civil service.

Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman of Arundel and South Downs Conservative Association, Mrs Sue Holland, said: “We are delighted that our hardworking and enthusiastic Member of Parliament has been reselected to stand to represent our beautiful constituency for a further five years.”
