Golden success for girlsin chemistry challenge
At the end of last term two Cranleigh pupils from the Lower sixth year, Olivia Chesser and Eleanor McAleese-Park, took part in the Cambridge University Chemistry Challenge. Around 8,500 keen chemistry students from independent and maintained schools all over the UK took part.
Both girls achieved marks in the top 8% of entrants earning themselves gold awards. The gold awards, for marks between 33 and 45 out of 60 were considered by the organisers to be very good indeed and demonstrated a significant leap beyond AS Level.
Head of chemistry, Sue Kemp, said “Olivia and Eleanor should be justly proud of their awards; gaining gold certificate in this paper is a really remarkable achievement. The girls had to apply and extend their understanding to unknown situations which required very high level thinking skills”.
