It was reported in your July 17 edition that Eastbourne bandstand will not reopen this year due to ongoing safety concerns.

This is regrettable but understandable given the current situation with the Covid-19 situation.

The bandstand rightly prides itself on being one of – if not the most – active in England in terms of performances.

Perhaps this period of closure could be put to good use by smartening up what, over the last few years, is becoming an increasingly tatty and apparently unloved feature of our seafront.

Scaffolding along the overhanging balcony has been in place for a long time now, with numerous missing tiles showing.

The wooden and glass screens that close off the building on the side behind the stage have not seen a coat of varnish for many a long year, with broken or cracked glass also in evidence.

The whole place just seems to be in need of a little care and attention.

Our seafront is one of the reasons so many visitors come to Eastbourne and they do not expect to see the sort of neglect that the bandstand is now showing or they will go elsewhere.

Whoever is responsible for the upkeep of this heritage building should use this opportunity to put things right.
