Coffee subsidy

Referring to Jan Stannard’s letter last week about the Garden Café in Rustington; I for one am surprised not only about the diabolical financial state of affairs but also the ridiculous response by Rustington Parish Councils chairman, Phil Evans.

It is clear that the Rustington taxpayers are effectively subsidising each cup of coffee, by the staggering losses this ‘business’ runs up.

I’d be interested to know how many other café workers in Rustington get every Sunday and Monday off, every bank holiday off and how many get 20 per cent pension contributions by the council, on top of their above average wages.

To cap it all, the council is using taxpayers’ money to subsidise a luxury that directly competes with genuine businesses who are struggling to survive in tight economic conditions.

Only a council’s pet project could make such losses for such a long time without closing down. Real businesses, like Rustington’s other cafes, must make a profit or else face closure and redundancies.

If you are losing money on every cup of coffee, then surely expanding the café to give away more food and drink will make bigger losses! Or am I not chartered accountant enough to see that reality?
