David Cullen (Herald letters January 8 click here to read) asks for some good news about Brexit. Where do I begin?

On animal welfare, we can finally stop live animals being transported across the continent from our shores, often in very distressing conditions. The practise of fishing using electric pulses was stopped on January 1, and sea bed trawling can now be tackled to protect fish stocks around our shores.

Barriers to the importation of products from the poorest parts of the world can now be dismantled and we can make our own trade deals with countries outside the EU for the first time in more than 40 years.

With the EU share of world trade in continuous decline, this can only be good for our future economic prospects.

Then, for me personally, the greatest plus of Brexit is the fact that from now onwards, all our laws will be made by those we elect to Westminster rather by bureaucrats in Brussels.

The good news keeps coming, David.

Our future is in our own hands.
