Brace yourself for months of roadworks on A21

JUST in case your readers and users of the A21 have not got to the fine print of the public notices in the Observer, from February 4 this year, the Highways Agency is going to undertake overnight repair works over a period of five months, so especially covering the Easter period!

That work is between John’s Cross and Baldslow, with traffic diverted via Battle on the A2100.

But to add to the difficulties, the Agency’s order is for 18 months, so even the work plan may be varied and changed with little notice.

Just to add to the traveller’s dilemma and the insomniac’s distress, the work will be carried out overnight, to reduce disruption of daylight traffic flows.

And great lengths will be closed during the works - which will patch up this totally inadequate road, where “slopes will be stabilised and associated works” carried out.

As one who tries very hard to travel the A21 out of hours, this is not good news. It will be even less fun when the Jempson, Sainsbury, Tesco and other large overnight lorries trundle their essential way through Battle.

So let’s tell our elected members of the County, of District and of Westminster, that the killer A21 is not a simple problem that will go away - unless it is converted into a sensible modern dual carriageway with all the benefits that would bring.

We need to demand and get a committed plan.
