VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Can you offer some of your free time to help others?

The position entails selecting copy from the local newspapers, collating it and presenting it in a format suitable for the readers to record.

These recordings are produced every fortnight so it would require four to six hours of editing every eight weeks.

The work is ideally suited to someone who can work on their own and is happy to work from home.

Full training would be given.

You would be joining a very dedicated and enthusiastic team whose aim is to bring news into the homes of those in the visually impaired community.

It is very rewarding and something that listeners really value.

Wilfrid’s Hospice urgently needs volunteers to help out in all of their shops.

If you have a few spare hours every week please consider volunteering – it’s a great way to make friends, learn new skills, be part of a team, gain useful work experience and most of all have fun!

Volunteers are a vital resource for the success of all their shops and they are always looking for committed individuals to help in the day to day running of the shops and Donation Centres.

Tasks might include: helping customers, sorting through donations and selecting the items that can be sold, preparing items for sale by hanging, sizing and ticketing, making sure the rails are always full of stock, helping to keep the shop clean and tidy, providing friendly customer service, helping on the till and promoting the work of the hospice.

You don’t need any qualifications and, in return for your help they can offer you a friendly atmosphere where you can meet and work with like-minded people and have fun!

The Samaritans is available 24 hours a day to provide confidential, emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.

They respond to phone calls, face-to-face, email and texts from people who are worried or desperate and/or suicidal by offering emotional support.

They are looking for more volunteer listeners to answer phone calls and provide support to callers.

You do not need any formal qualifications or previous experience, but you do need an ability to listen in complete confidence and without judging or giving advice. Minimum age 18.

Arundel C of E School would greatly appreciate help from adults from the local community, able to come into school and help children with reading.

Adult volunteer ‘Reading Buddies’ will be paired with children at the school, and work with them to develop their reading.

The children read aloud and their Reading Buddy can help them relate to new words or concepts, instilling a love of books which will hopefully stay with the children throughout their lives.

Adults with special knowledge of topics the school uses in lessons are also needed to bring learning alive.

Volunteers will be assigned a teacher/class exploring a particular topic and together they will tailor the volunteer opportunity; approximately an hour a week.

To celebrate ten years of steel pan at the Littlehampton Academy and the launch of charity Sussex Steel, a concert is being held at the Worthing Pavillion on July 18, which will feature 150 performers.

Experienced adult volunteers are needed to help chaperone groups of school age performers before and during the performance.

They are also seeking volunteers to help welcome the audience and carry out front of house roles.
