ST BARNABAS: New specialist nurses enable hospice to help more people

Yesterday marked the fifth anniversary of the new building, and it is incredible to think how far we have come during that time.

St Barnabas House now reaches out to more people than ever before and we are about to embark on an exciting new era for the hospice, providing specialist care for other end-stage conditions as well as cancer.

We currently reach 80 per cent of local people with cancer or motor neurone disease, but less than 10 per cent of people with a non-cancer related condition.

In light of those statistics, we have taken the decision to invest in four new specialist nurses in order to enable us to reach the people in our community who we have been unable to help before.

One of the nurses, Sarah Randall, is already in post and delighted to be working in the new role of renal supportive care clinical nurse specialist.

Sarah’s background is in cancer care and in her new role she hopes to enable people with advanced kidney disease to live as independently and comfortably as possible for the time they have left.

We are also in the process of recruiting for three more posts: a heart failure specialist, a liver specialist and a dementia care specialist, and we look forward to telling you more about how these nurses will enable us to reach more local people who need our care over the coming weeks.
