KEVIN KING: Great British Bake Off set to return to our TV screens

As I’ve said before in this column, there’s no doubt that us Brits love a TV cooking show, so therefore I’ve not been surprised by the level of excitement generated by the appearance of Messer’s Berry, Hollywood, Perkins and Giedroyc on the ads promoting for the return of ‘Bake Off’.

Yes, ‘The Great British Bake Off’ and its accompanying spin-off, ‘An Extra Slice’, will be welcomed back not just into sitting rooms but anywhere that the show can be viewed – which in this era of smartphones and tablets is, actually, anywhere.

Woe betide me as a breakfast show presenter should I break the cardinal rule of mentioning which contestant was voted off the show on the morning after the episode’s transmission.

Gone are the days of simply watching a programme when it’s broadcast, for these days I must think of the Sky Plussers, the Tivo-ers and the downloaders, and have to remember to issue a “spoiler alert” ahead of any mention of cakes, buns and pies, lest I incur the wroth of a Mary/Paul-aholic!

You would think that a baking competition in a marquee set in a gorgeous country setting may be a uniquely British way of passing an hour of TV, but no!

The programme is a huge BBC hit and has been sold to 17 countries around the world with the format looking very much the same apart from a few countries where the title has been slightly altered to become a ‘tournament’, as literal translations of ‘bake off, sound more like an angry instruction than a rivalry among cake makers!

In Holland it’s ‘Hell Holland Bakt’ (All Of Holland Bake), with a similar title in Sweden.

In France it’s simply ‘The Best Baker’ and in Germany ‘The Great Baking’, but my favourite of all the international versions is the title they chose in Denmark; ‘Den Store Bagedyst’, which translates into ‘The Great Bake Fight’.

I know that sometimes the judges become a little exasperated with the bakers but I can’t quite imagine Mary and Paul launching into a custard pie fight.

Although, there’s always Mel and Sue!
