Olympic torch route through Arundel announced

The exact time and route of the flame’s journey through the streets of Arundel, as well as other areas in the district, has been released by Olympic organisers, this morning (Monday, March 19).

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets as the torch begins its journey through Arundel, on July 16, at the western end of Maltravers Street, near the A27 roundabout, from 3.38pm.

It will then travel along the road, into the centre of the town and make its way down the High Street.

The relay route will then turn left into Mill Road and enter Arundel Castle, briefly, before heading back down Mill Road, into Queen Street and eventually finishing at the eastern end of The Causeway, near the Arundel railway station.

The torch will then move off to Worthing, beginning the relay route there at 4.25pm before passing through Lancing.

Organisers believe publishing the route now gives everyone time to plan how they will celebrate the flame coming through but also how it will affect their day-to-day business.

Arun District Council’s cabinet member for economic and cultural development with responsibility for tourism, councillor Norman Dingemans, said: “We want everyone to remember forever the moment that the torch passed through Arun.

“We are looking forward to working with local people to showcase the district and to welcome the flame and support members of the community who have been chosen to run with it.”

The 70-day Olympic torch relay will start at Land’s End, Cornwall, on the morning of May 19.

It will travel an estimated 8,000 miles across the country before entering the Olympic Stadium, in London, to officially open the games, on July 27.
