Young volunteers on the Build Yourself project are due to begin work on a staircase and landing area at The Pelham.

This part of the building is in desperate need of renovation.

Once the work is complete, the venue can use the refurbished ballroom upstairs as a community space for hire.

Build Yourself is a community project run by Fresh Visions, the charity hosted and supported by housing association AmicusHorizon.

The Build Yourself project gives low waged and unemployed 18-24 year olds the opportunity to learn DIY skills.

The group will be working at The Pelham in Holliers Hill between February 22 and March 31.

They will be given the opportunity to learn a number of skills including plastering, wall papering, painting and how to use power tools.

Lisa Buckland, project officer, said: “We’re really looking forward to making a difference to another venue in East Sussex.

“And we can’t wait to work with a new group of young people.

“It’s amazing to see how this project builds their confidence and makes them realise their potential and worth.

“So many previous participants have gone on to secure jobs afterwards which is fantastic.”

Build Yourself also offers opportunities to gain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry.

The project is funded by Comic Relief, AmicusHorizon, Orbit Housing Association and BSW Heating.
