New crucifix blessed at Shoreham church

Matthew and Sally Bristow, when visiting from New Zealand, had noticed that one hand of Jesus on the original crucifix was broken.

They decided to do something about it, as Matthew’s father had cast the original one 50 years ago.

Matthew and Sally ordered a new crucifix to be made using the same mould as the original and brought it safely to St Nicolas, all the way from New Zealand.

They presented it at a recent Saturday coffee morning in the church and the crucifix was blessed by the Rev James Grant at the 9.30am service on Sunday, before being installed above the altar in the north transept.

St Nicolas Church is open every day from 9am to 5pm in the summer and to 4pm in the winter.

Jeannette Simpson, a member of the church council, said: “Anyone is welcome to come in and see the crucifix and spend a few minutes in the peace of this beautiful church.”
