New Council Tax bills

BEXHILL families now know how much their yearly Council Tax bill will cost.

A band D property will pay 1,492.49 for the year 2008/2009.

This represents an increase of just over 60 on last year's 1,432.30 bill for the same property.

Rother's portion on the tax is 197.73 for Bexhill homeowners owning a Band D property - compared to 188.24 last year.

The East Sussex County Council element for a mid-range property stands at 1,089, with Sussex Police charging 128.70 and East Sussex Fire Authority billing band D homes 77.06.

Rother set the band D Council Tax district figure at 150.68 - an increase of 4.83 per cent. The figure then alters depending on the parish and any special expenses for the area.

Rother leader Cllr Carl Maynard told members at their last cabinet meeting the figure was still the lowest in East Sussex.

He said: "It is important that the council sets its own element of Council Tax at a level that ensures that services are delivered to a standard that is supported by its residents. The recent independent survey carried out as part of this year's budget setting process, showed that there was strong support for an increase in Council Tax to support improved services.

"The council will have to meet a substantial increase in the cost of the new concessionary bus pass scheme despite the fact that the increase in the Government grant for the coming year represented a real terms reduction in Government funding."
