Darvel Down & Area Residents Committee Meeting: It is always a pleasure to attend these gatherings as it highlights local issues and attempts to solve some of the problems which arise in the Netherfield community. The meeting was held at 7.30 at the Village Hall on 3 March. The Chairman David Stone opened proceedings and offered Sue Leeves apologies for being unable to attend. After the various reports were given by the Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary, discussions began on events that could be staged in the future.

Possible venues, such as the Village Hall and the Top Green at Darvel Down, were discussed for upcoming events such as the Queen’s 90th birthday, an annual fete and other initiatives involving the children and the community. Surprisingly, there is a lot of paperwork surrounding these suggestions and some underlying charges, which require careful consideration when the committee undertake their cost/benefit analysis.

There was also a protracted and robust debate on having minutes for the meeting sent to committee members within a 7 day timeframe. This turnaround limit is meant to secure the momentum that is generated within the various discussions that take place on a multitude of topics. Almost unanimous agreement. So now adopted as official policy.

Sedlescombe & District Garden Society: SDGS still have some tickets left for “An Evening with Tom Hart Dyke” on Wednesday 16th March 2016. TV personality Tom Hart Dyke, heir to the family seat of Lullingstone Castle in Eynsford, Kent will be giving an illustrated talk on his vast horticultural experiences. Tom is an English horticulturist, author and plant hunter who presented an episode of The Great British Garden Revival shown on BBC2 in 2013. He created the World Garden of Plants located at Lullingstone which contains approximately 8,000 species of plants, many collected by Tom from their native environments. The story of the creation was featured in a BBC2 6-episode series “Save Lullingstone Castle” in 2006. The event will be free for SDGS members but non-members are welcome at a cost of £5.00 per person. (N.B. an annual family membership to the Society only costs £10.00 so why not join and take advantage of a full and varied programme of events for 2016)

The event will take place at Sedlescombe Village hall and the doors will open at 6.30 p.m. for a 7.00 p.m. start. Refreshments will be provided as well as a raffle with some really good prizes. A lot of interest has already been shown for this event, so to avoid disappointment, please reserve your tickets by contacting Sue Parsons on 01580 831996.

Netherfield Mobile Library: The library is due again in Netherfield, outside the Village Stores on 15 March 2016, between 13.00 and 13.20. It is that time of year when the frost is on the ground and it is nice to think of curling up on the sofa with a good book. You can ask Ella to recommend something different or she can guide you in the right direction if you have something specific in mind. There are books for everyone including the children. You can also browse the current crop of books on http://www.lovereading.co.uk/. So come along and make your choice and get lost in a book.

Netherfield Stores and Post Office: Bob Dylan once sang that “The times they are a-changin’” and so they are at the Post Office in Netherfield. Modern services such as manual banking (non-barcoded transactions), Transcash, Royal Mail and Parcelforce Worldwide International parcels will all be on offer to everybody. Even so, with all these modern innovations you can still pay by cheque. With the new coffeee shop soon to be opening its doors, you will be able to conduct your financial transactions while sipping a latte and munching on a slice of lemon drizzle cake. What could be better? Longer opening hours mean that Janette and her team can make any visit an even more memorable experience. However, to give us all this 21st Century look will require closure of the Post Office on 22 March. The grand re-opening will take place on 31 March, so not loong to wait for something completely different. See you there!
