COASTGUARDS in Littlehampton are warning people not to wade into muddy stretches on the River Arun, at low tide.

It follows in the wake of an incident last Tuesday, when a Littlehampton lifeboat crew and members of the Littlehampton Harbour Board rescued a man who was trapped in the mud.

The coastguards assessed the scene, alongside the east bank, and noted that recent rain had softened the mud.

A spokesman said: “Any weight is currently liable to sink much further down into the mud while sediments and clay platelets are in an unsettled state. The public is advised against traversing mudflats, and should call the coastguard if they see anyone in trouble in this environment.”
