MP backs No ID, No sale message

NO ID, no sale '“ that's the message from shopkeepers in Adur who are encouraging teenagers to join the CitizenCard scheme.

Supermarkets, shops and convenience stores are backing the scheme, which enables people to prove they are old enough to buy products including alcohol, cigarettes, fireworks and solvents, by using a credit-card sized photo ID card.

Ian Patel, manager of the Premier Sompting convenience store, in Sompting Road, Lancing, said he welcomed the scheme.

"We often get youngsters trying to buy alcohol or cigarettes. It is very difficult to tell their real age, so we have to ask for ID.

"Unfortunately, customers without ID often become abusive, so, to prevent this, we hand out a CitizenCard application form and tell them to get a card."

East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton has added his support to the scheme and urged all local shops to back the campaign.
