Monika Smith's film pulls in plenty of charity money

A film about the life and times of popular Bognor photojournalist Monika Smith, who died last year at the age of 55, and which was given the red carpet treatment at a special premiere earlier this year, has raised more than £1,500 for worthy causes.

On Monday, cheques were presented to representatives from the four charities, all of which reflected facets of Monika's life. "Thanks go to those who made the premiere screening of Cycle Writer, which is still available on DVD, a success, among them Stuart McKears for the production of his superb film showing of a colourful year in Monika's life," said her husband Roy.

"Thanks go also to those wonderful friends led by Simone Froud and the premiere team who gave their time, energy and support for the event and to my daughter Sara and son-in-law Mark Barrott for their kindness."

All of the money raised from the event held at the Alexandra Theatre in the Regis Centre last May went to the charities.

They were 4Sight, West Sussex Association for the Blind; the Bognor-based Rox Music and Arts Organisation; The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre in Sidlesham and the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign which all shared the 1,540 raised.

"There were no administration costs, all money raised from ticket sales and several generous donations went to the four charities. The refreshments and facilities were all donated," continued Roy.

He also thanked theatre manager Adam Cunard who, he said, "was wonderful and very professional," and the trustees who donated the venue.

"The theatre must be supported, it is a valuable asses for the town," he said.

Monika was followed for a year as she set out from home in Elmer on her trusty bicycle in her quest for stories.

She was seen on land, on sea, standing on a chair, clambering up a ladder and lying on the ground to capture the most eye-catching shots.

"Through it all shines her vibrant personality and popularity in what turned out to be her final year of work before cancer claimed her life at the young age of 55.

"Monika's death in 2006 has added a poignancy to Cycle Writer, but that does nothing to diminish its impact as an accurate portrayal of life as a journalist in the early 21st century," said Stuart McKears.

"There are no talking heads, no commentary and very little music to the film which showed only Monika as she went about her work in the full length documentary about small town journalism."

Two screenings of the film took place, including a red carpet, champagne and canap evening performance organised by Simone Froud, helped by Carol Allen, Bridget Woods, Rex Goodheart, Nick Jenkins, Felicity Jones and Roy Smith.
