Midsummer walk and barbecue organised by council

The circular walk from the Kissingate Brewery in Lower Beeding will take place on Saturday July 20 from 10:30am and will be around four miles long.

The route is quite shady and takes in the ups and downs of the ghylls and streams that flow south of St Leonard’s Forest and walkers will also pass two hammer ponds, which are relics of the ancient iron workings of the area.

The walk will begin at Kissingate Brewery in Church Lane, Lower Beeding, and walkers will stroll along Hammerpond Road into St Leonard’s Forest.

The walk has some quite steep hills, three streams and bridges, through Mannings Heath golf course and then walkers come out on Hammerpond Road again.

It is expected to take around two hours to complete, with toilets, stiles, refreshments and hills along the way and dogs are also welcome.

Sue Rogers (Con, Steyning), HDC’s cabinet member for a safer and healthier district, said: “What better way to enjoy this glorious sunshine than by taking a walk through our beautiful countryside.

“Not only can you take in the lovely sights of this walk but also get some good exercise as well.”

The Kissingate Brewery has very kindly agreed that walkers can use its car park free of charge.

Visitors will also have the delight of tasting the Kissingate Beer at £2.50 per pint, meeting the brewer and having a barbecue.

The walk is free but tickets for the barbecue cost £8 per person, and vegetarians are very welcome. Wine and soft drinks will also be available.
