THE National Trust is in the process of its biggest ever woodland restoration project at the Slindon Estate.

Named The Rise of Northwood, after the ancient oak and beech trees that once stood on this site, the project will see 185 acres of arable fields – the equivalent size of 600 Olympic swimming pools or 105 football pitches – returned to woodland.

The charity said for visitors this would mean significant changes to the landscape, increased public access and more wildlife to spot while out walking.

The ten-year plan will also see the creation of woodland glades and new rides, while a variety of techniques will be applied to establish the trees.
