The 50-year-old man received minor injuries and the burglar fled empty-handed, running south down Clifton Road.

The burglar is described as white, clean shaven, between 5ft 11ins and 6ft, with dark hair, wearing dark blue jeans, white trainers, a light-coloured jacket and he was carrying a large canvass bag and a hammer.

DS Natalie Vellacott, from Worthing police, called for anyone with any information to contact police on 0845 60 70 999.

She added: "Fortunately, incidents of this nature are rare in Worthing and I would offer reassurance to residents that this is a most unusual crime."
