Littlehampton hails first farmers’ market

Following in the successful footsteps of the town’s weekly Friday market, organiser Southern Counties Markets, alongside Littlehampton Town Council, Arun District Council and the Littlehampton Traders’ Partnership, is hoping to make the event a regular feature.

This weekend’s market will take place in High Street, from 9am to 3.30pm.

It will feature a whole range of locally-sourced produce at its 30 stalls.

These will include fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, sausages, and other meats.

There will even be a stall devoted to craftwear produced in the Littlehampton area.

Market operator, Colin Cashin, of Southern Counties Markets, said he was optimistic that the event had a bright future in the town.

He said: “The response to the general market has been overwhelmingly positive, from both traders and locals in the town.

“Normally, you would expect to find a few businesses against the idea, but in Littlehampton there have been no objections, which is incredible.”

He added: “We are hoping this will help to increase business in the town as well as making Littlehampton a more attractive place to visit.”

The market is set to run every second and fourth Saturday of the month, from July.

Simon Vickers, chairman of the Littlehampton Traders’ Partnership, praised the move.

Speaking to the Gazette on Friday, Simon, – who owns the Arun Furnishers store in Beach Road – said: “This is a tremendously promising move for businesses in Littlehampton, and I’m very excited to see what the future holds.”
